The year 2025 was a remarkable period for The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Nigeria (TMDCN) as we expanded our reach, strengthened awareness, and provided vital support to individuals and families affected by Muscular Dystrophy. Our activities focused on education, advocacy, community engagement, and direct assistance to improve quality of life.
Key Highlights of 2025
- Knowledge Sharing and Education
February 2025: Virtual knowledge-sharing session with Lily College of Nursing Sciences, Warri, Delta State
• Topic: Muscular Dystrophy – Causes, Care, and Management.
• Audience: All nursing and midwifery students and staff.
• Impact: Enhanced understanding among healthcare professionals on managing Muscular Dystrophy.
- Global Webinar
September 2025: Virtual webinar moderated by Dr. Ofonmbuk Ibanga, featuring Dr. Emmanuel Iwuozor
• Topic: Diagnosis to Daily Life with Muscular Dystrophy: Patient and Family Perspective.
• Audience: People living with MD and their families, Neurologists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Media representatives across Nigeria, Canada, UK, USA.
• Impact: Provided a global platform for sharing patient and family experiences, fostering empathy and knowledge exchange.
- Community Engagement
• In-Person Awareness Campaigns: We reached local communities in Imo and Abia States, including:
- God is Able Maternity, Alike Obowo LGA, Imo State
- Achingali Government Health Care Centre, Obowo
- Ogbotoukwu Health Centre, Obowo LGA
- Nnarambia Health Centre, Ahiazu Mbaise
- Dikenta/Dikeukwu, Ekenobizi Health Centre, Umuahia South, Abia State
• Social Media Campaigns: During Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month (September), we shared daily educational content across Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, reaching thousands of people globally.
- Support and Assistance
TMDCN provided essential resources to individuals affected by Muscular Dystrophy, including:
• Mobility aids
• Educational assistance
• Advisory services
• Other vital support to improve quality of life.
- Milestone
For the first time, TMDCN celebrated Christmas with 15 individuals living with Muscular Dystrophy and their families, spreading joy and hope. This was made possible through generous donations from the Christmas Fundraising Appeal which raised a total of three hundred and fifty thousand naira (₦350,000). We are grateful to Dr Emeka Oloto, Dr Folarin Olubowale, and Chinedu Njoku, our donors who made this possible.
Conclusion
2025 was a year of growth, impact, and compassion. TMDCN remains committed to raising awareness, supporting affected individuals, and advocating for better care and management of Muscular Dystrophy in Nigeria and beyond.
