Services

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Nigeria (TMDCN) is committed to improving the lives of people living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions by providing a range of practical, educational, and supportive services. Our services are designed to empower individuals and families, improve access to healthcare and essential resources, promote independence, and enhance overall quality of life.

Whether you are seeking information, specialist referrals, advocacy, mobility support, career guidance, or opportunities for economic empowerment, TMDCN is here to provide guidance and connect you with the support you need. While some services are delivered directly by TMDCN, others are provided in partnership with trusted organisations and healthcare professionals to ensure individuals receive the most appropriate care and support.

Advocacy Support

We support individuals living with muscular dystrophy who face barriers, discrimination, or unequal treatment in education, employment, healthcare, and community life. We provide guidance, raise awareness of disability rights, and work with individuals, families, employers, schools, and other organisations to promote inclusion and reasonable adjustments. Our aim is to help people access equal opportunities and participate fully in society.

Mobility Equipment Support

We help improve independence and quality of life by supporting access to mobility and daily living equipment. Subject to available funding and eligibility, we may assist with the procurement of wheelchairs, walking aids, bathing and toileting equipment, positioning and transfer aids, and other assistive devices that enable individuals to live more safely, comfortably, and independently.

Career Guidance

We provide personalised one-to-one career guidance to help individuals living with muscular dystrophy identify realistic career pathways, develop transferable skills, and prepare for employment or self-employment. Support may include career planning, CV and cover letter development, interview preparation, job search strategies, and guidance on workplace adjustments to help individuals achieve their career aspirations.

Education and information

We provide reliable information, educational resources, and practical guidance to individuals living with muscular dystrophy, their families, carers, educators, and healthcare professionals. Through information materials, workshops, webinars, and awareness activities, we help people better understand muscular dystrophy, available support, educational opportunities, and strategies for independent living. Our goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and achieve their full potential.

Signposting

TMDCN helps individuals and families access appropriate healthcare and support services by signposting and referring them to trusted professionals and specialist facilities. Where appropriate, we facilitate referrals to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, specialist hospitals, and other relevant support services for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing care. We also work with partner organisations to improve access to services where local support is limited.

Please note: TMDCN is not a healthcare provider. Referrals are based on individual needs and the availability of suitable services. A referral does not guarantee acceptance, treatment, or funding by the receiving provider.

Small Business Start-up

We provide small business start-up grants to eligible individuals living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions to support financial independence and sustainable livelihoods. In addition to financial assistance, we encourage applicants to develop viable business ideas and plans that demonstrate the potential for long-term success. Funding is subject to eligibility criteria, available resources, and assessment of each application.

Our Partners

Specialist Hospital Referral

TMDCN partners with The Human Race Specialist Medical Diagnostic Center in Owerri to help individuals access specialist neuromuscular care. The hospital provides diagnostic assessments, diagnostic testing, specialist consultations, treatment, follow-up care, and referrals where appropriate. Their goal is to deliver high-quality, patient-centred healthcare at an affordable cost.

Please note: TMDCN facilitates referrals to this partner but does not provide medical services directly. Appointments, assessments, and treatment are managed by the hospital and are subject to their clinical processes and availability.

Occupational Therapy Support

Our occupational therapy partner Talk to a Therapist, based in Benin City, provides both clinic-based and home-based services to individuals across Nigeria. Their services include:

  • Assessment and support with activities of daily living, including self-care, mobility, home management, and work-related tasks.
  • Personalised rehabilitation programmes, including positioning, exercise, and pain management.
  • Assessment, provision, and training in the use of assistive devices such as orthoses, communication aids, and mobility equipment.
  • Advice on home and workplace modifications to improve accessibility and independence.
  • Collaborative care with healthcare professionals, families, carers, teachers, and employers.
  • Education and psychosocial support for individuals and their families.

Please note: TMDCN facilitates referrals to this partner but does not provide occupational therapy services directly. Access is subject to the provider’s assessment and availability.

Virtual Physiotherapy Support

TMDCN works with trusted partners to improve access to physiotherapy for people living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions. Wherever possible, we signpost individuals to physiotherapy services within their local community. When local services are unavailable or inaccessible, we may refer individuals to one of our partner organisations that provides virtual physiotherapy consultations and rehabilitation support.

Please note: Virtual physiotherapy services are provided by our partner organisation. Access is subject to availability, eligibility, and the partner’s assessment and scheduling process. TMDCN facilitates referrals but does not provide physiotherapy services directly.
