Early recognition and appropriate management of muscular dystrophy can make an important difference to the lives of affected individuals and their families.
However, muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions can be challenging to recognise, diagnose and manage, particularly where healthcare professionals have limited exposure to these conditions.
The TMDCN Healthcare Professionals Education Programme aims to improve awareness and understanding of muscular dystrophy among healthcare professionals and strengthen their ability to recognise the condition and respond appropriately to the needs of affected individuals.
Why Healthcare Professional Education Matters
People living with muscular dystrophy may encounter different healthcare professionals throughout their lives, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other allied health professionals.
Greater understanding of muscular dystrophy can help healthcare professionals:
- Recognise possible signs and symptoms
- Understand the importance of early referral and diagnosis
- Provide appropriate information and support
- Understand the multidisciplinary needs of people living with muscular dystrophy
- Identify potential complications requiring specialist attention
- Support rehabilitation and functional independence
- Communicate more effectively with individuals and families
- Promote more inclusive and person-centred care
What We Do
Through the programme, TMDCN supports educational and awareness activities for healthcare professionals and healthcare institutions.
Activities may include:

- Lived-Experience Learning: Where appropriate, incorporating the perspectives of people living with muscular dystrophy and their families to help healthcare professionals understand the realities of living with the condition.
