As part of Rare Disease Month, The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Nigeria (TMDCN), in collaboration with T-Rehab, delivered an educational seminar to students of the Federal School of Occupational Therapy, Oshodi, Lagos, titled “Inclusive Education for Children with Muscular Dystrophy: The Role of an Occupational Therapist.”
The seminar addressed the challenges faced by children living with Muscular Dystrophy in Nigeria, where rare diseases and neuromuscular conditions remain poorly understood and are often associated with stigma, delayed diagnosis, and limited access to specialist care. These barriers extend beyond healthcare, significantly affecting access to quality and inclusive education.
Participants explored the educational obstacles encountered by children with Muscular Dystrophy, including inaccessible learning environments, inadequate support services, and the limited implementation of inclusive education policies.
The discussions highlighted the critical role Occupational Therapists play in promoting inclusion through classroom adaptations, assistive technology, environmental accessibility, and collaboration with families, educators, and school administrators.
The seminar emphasized practical strategies for creating inclusive, equitable, and dignified learning opportunities for children living with Muscular Dystrophy and reinforced the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in advancing inclusive education in Nigeria.
The session was moderated by Dr. Ofonmbuk Ibanga, with presentations delivered by Obianuju Amamgbo of The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Nigeria (TMDCN) and Olufemi Arowolo of T-Rehab. The seminar provided students with valuable insights into the role of occupational therapy in supporting children with neuromuscular conditions and fostering inclusive educational environments.
